History of World Water Day

The idea for World Water Day was initially thought about in the year of 1992. This idea was officially proposed in the Agenda 21 of the United Nations official conference. The United Nations Organization held a conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro in the same year. On March 22nd, 1992, the idea for the World Day for Water was agreed upon after a mutual decision. It was finalized that World Day for Water will be celebrated every year on March 22nd.

The first-ever World Day for Water was observed in the year 1993, on March 22nd. Some years later, some other events were also added to this day like in the year of 2013, the International Year of Cooperation in the Water Sphere was commemorated and currently, the International decade for Action of Water for Sustainable Development from the year 2018 to the year of 2028, is being observed. Significance of World Day for Water

World Day for Water has a lot of significance because it was on this day that the United Nations Organization highlights the importance of freshwater and educates the general public about its importance. This day also aims to throw light on the crisis regarding the issue of fresh water worldwide. This day also aims in alerting people about the rising problems related to fresh water in the world. These problems arise due to the increase in human population, the inequality in the distribution of fresh water worldwide, the extent of rapid urbanization, and the effects of global warming and climate changes. The quantity of fresh water also gets depleted because of its usage in industries in making several beverages and other products. Fresh water is also used in the agricultural sector and livestock farms. The United Nations Organization stresses on the conservation of fresh water on World Day for Water.

The World Day for Water is associated with the Sustainable Development Goal, organized by the United Nations General Assembly, in the year 2015. Conservation of fresh water is one of the seventeen main goals that the United Nations General Assembly aims in achieving by the end of this decade, that is, by the end of the year 2030. It aims to achieve a sustainable future for the entire human civilization, including social, economic, and environmental spheres, and promote world peace and harmony.

Reasons why we should conserve fresh water

  • Conservation of water can reduce droughts, and barren lands like deserts and other dry areas can be put under use. Agriculture can be done in these areas, and therefore there will be more production of crops. This will help in the rise of the economy and also prevent water shortages.
  • Water is used for running of other resources. Most of the machines work with the help of water and it helps to cool the machines from the heat produced due to the friction.
  • Plants require water to grow and thrive. Plants are also an important element for our survival because they give out oxygen, which helps us to live. Without water, it will be difficult for any plant or even an animal to survive, and as a result, it would be difficult for the entire humankind to survive.
  • Our planet Earth gets heated up really quick, which is why it is important for us to conserve fresh water. Water helps in bringing rainfall which cools down the planet and also prevents global warming. Conserving water helps in using the existing supply of fresh water in an efficient manner.
  • Conserving water can also be related to social justice. There are several places in the world that are devoid of a sufficient amount of water, and therefore, conservation of water would help every place in this world to have the necessary amount of water for consumption and other purposes.

World Day for Water throws light on the necessities of conserving water and encourages everyone to take measures to conserve fresh water to the best of their capabilities.
