Significance and History of Martyrs' Day

30th January and 23rd March are celebrated as Martyr days in India. These days were separated because of the two underlying incidents.

Assassination of Mahatma Gandhi

This day is considered to be a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. The loss of a freedom fighter who brought us independence is recognized as Martyr's day. Nathuram Godse assassinated the father of the nation on 30th January 1948. Bapu was shot three times in blank range when he was on his way to address an evening prayer and was accompanied by his grandnieces. It is believed that Nathuram was a cultural national who believed in the superiority of Hinduism over other cultures. He justified his act by a statement that Gandhi's promotion of Unity among Hindus and Muslims would place the nation under threat. Therefore, he was not guilty of the act and surrendered himself post the assassination.

Capital punishment for young leaders

This day in 1931, three youthful freedom fighters were hanged to death by British autocrats in a conspiracy case.

Bhagat Singh, along with Shivram Rajguru, Sukhdev Thapar and Chandrashekhar Azad, decided to take vengeance of lathi charge on Lala Lajpat Rai in kick against Simon Commission. Rai couldn't survive the lathi charge injuries and breathed his last on 17th November 1928. In error, John P Saunders, Assistant Superintendent of Police, was killed after he left the District Police Headquarters in Lahore by Rajguru and Bhagat Singh. After the incident, Bhagat Singh and his associates were unseen for several months. In April 1929, Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt exploded two bombs in the Central Legislative Assembly in Delhi as a protest against the Trade Dispute Act and the Public Safety Bill. Many were injured due to the bomb blast however, there was no loss of lives. Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar stayed there crying Inquilab Zindabad, which led to Bhagat Singh's arrest. Sukhdev was arrested after the bomb factory in Lahore and Saharanpur was discovered by the police. Rajguru was arrested on the same day, i.e., 30th September 1929. Although these men were arrested in different cases, the police created a false plot and held Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru liable for the death of Saunders and sentenced them to death. The case was later termed as Lahore Conspiracy Case.

Although the death sentence schedule was on 24th March, Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev were hanged a day before on 23rd March at 7:30 pm. The last solemnities were performed at the banks of the Sutlej River.

The day is remembered for the bravery act of young fighters in India.

India's way of Honour

The Prime Minister, President, Vice-President, Defense Minister and the three Service Chiefs pay their respect to the father of the nation by showering his Samadhi at Raj Ghat with flowers. On these days, various activities such as poetry, speech, drama are carried out to pay tribute as well as to salute the revolutionaries who did not deter even in the face of death.
