Introduction of Kargil Vijay Diwas

The beginning took place on July 26, and the Indian Army recaptured all of the Indian posts in Kargil occupied by Pakistani forces 22 years ago today. Since then, July 26 has been set aside each year to commemorate the sacrifices made by infantrymen during the battle.

The battle took place in Jammu and Kashmir's Kargil district between May and July 1999. The war is thought to have been orchestrated by General Pervez Musharraf, Pakistan's then-military leader, without knowing Pakistan's then-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. It all started with regular Pakistani troops and terrorists infiltrating the Indian Territory. The infiltrators set up shop in strategic locations, giving them a strategic advantage at the start of the battle. The Indian Army confirmed the factors of incursion and launched "Operation Vijay" based on data from local shepherds. India launched intercepts of conversations between top Pakistani navy officers as proof of the Pakistan Army's involvement in the infiltrations through various means. Nawaz Sharif, Pakistan's prime minister, flew to Washington and asked the US to intervene. However, Bill Clinton, the US president, refused to do so until Pakistani troops had withdrawn from the Line of Control.

Every 12 months on July 26, India commemorates the Indian Army's victory over Pakistan withinside the Kargil highlands of Ladakh after greater than 60 days of armed battle in 1999.

On Monday, President Ram Nath Kovind will travel to Dress to pay respects to the memorial, which is located near the Tolling foothills. According to the corporations, General Bipin Rawat, the Chief of Defense Staff (CDS), will also attend the Kargil Vijay Diwas celebrations.

Kargil Vijay Diwas is commemorated in honour of Kargil's battle heroes, those whose lives were lost due to the battle; infantrymen who died in the line of duty while serving their country. Every year, on the 'everlasting flame,' Amar Jawan Jyoti, at India Gate in Delhi, the Prime Minister pays his respects to the military. Celebrations are held both in the Kargil region and throughout the United States to honour the contributions of the Indian Army.

The navy marketing campaign, dubbed 'Operation Vijay,' took place in July 1999 and saw Indian Army troops clearing the Kargil region of infiltrators, protecting both Pakistani infantrymen and riot forces. The Indian Army eventually hosted the countrywide flag at Kargil on July 26 after defeating its adversaries within the battle. It is estimated that 527 Indian infantrymen died in the battle, with more than 1,300 others injured. The upcoming Kargil Vijay Diwas 2021 will take place against the backdrop of India's raging coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic, for which military officers have informed news organizations that celebrations will be scaled back this year.

History of Kargil Vijay Diwas

Even though both sides have attempted to manipulate the Siachen Glacier by erecting army outposts on neighbouring mountain slopes on numerous occasions since the Indo-Pakistan conflict of 1971, the two sides have rarely engaged in direct combat battles. This resulted in army scuffles in the 1980s, which worsened in the 1990s. The nuclear assessments conducted by India and Pakistan in 1998 aggravated the situation. But, just as it appeared that each nation's desire had been lost, in February 1999, all nations signed the Lahore Declaration, pledging to find nonviolent solutions to the Kashmir problem.

According to reliable sources, Pakistani army forces have been secretly training their troops to cross the Line of Control into India in the same year (or LoC). Their goal was to sever ties between Ladakh and Kashmir and put pressure on the Indian Armed Forces to leave the Siachen Glacier. The Indian army forces were initially unaware of the nature of the incursion. Assuming they were jihadis, the Indian defence force predicted they would be evicted in a matter of days. It wasn't until later that they noticed Pakistan's assault approach had grown in size and discovered penetration along the LOC. With Operation Vijay, the Indian government retaliated forcefully, mobilizing approximately 200,000 Indian troops to fight.
