About Ram Navami

Ram Navami is celebrated on the occasion of the birth of Shri Ram, the Hindu god. It is celebrated on the ninth day of the first month of the Hindu calendar. It generally falls between the month of March-April. It is said that the Shri Ram is the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Ram Navami is celebrated on the 9th day of Chaitra Navaratri. Lord Ram is one of the important Hindu gods. His birthday is celebrated with great enthusiasm and devotion. The main cities which celebrate his birthday are Ayodhya and Rameshwaram.

Ram was born to King Dashratha and Queen Kaushalya in Ayodhya. Queen Kaushalya was the first wife of King Dashratha, who was the king of Ayodhya. Ram Navami 2021 was celebrated by Hindus on 21 April.

History of Ram Navami

According to legends, it is told that King Dashratha was not able to conceive a child with any of his wives. He had three wives named Kausalya, Kaikeyi, and Sumitra. It made him sad as he wanted a boy who could rule Ayodhya after him. So, he performed a Putra Kamesti Yagna so that his queens could bear his child. The performance of Yagna was advised by Rishi Vashishth. After the performance of the yagna, queens were offered kheer, which was blessed by Yajna, Lord of Yagna. Soon after the performance of the yagna, all three queens conceived a child. Queen Kausalya gave birth on the ninth day of Chaitra Navratri to Lord Ram. Sumitra gave birth to the twins named Laxman and Shatrughna. Kaikeyi gave birth to Bharata.

Ram went to exile for 14 years because of King Dashrath's promise to her wife, Kaikeyi. Ram returned to Ayodhya after 14 years and became its beloved ruler.

Significance of Ram Navami

Ram is the central figure of one of the two most important epics of Hindus that is Ramayana. His birth signifies the win of good over evil. Ram was the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu and the hero of the Ramayana. Ramayana is not only famous in India but in the whole of South Asia. Thus because of these reasons, Ram Navami is celebrated with zeal. Surya is also offered water at the start of the festival to get his blessings. It is believed that the ancestors of Ram were the descendants of Surya.

How is Ram Navami celebrated?

Ram Navami is celebrated in many ways. On the occasion of the festival, people clean their houses thoroughly. People put up photos of Lord Ram, Hanuman, Sita, and Laxman. They decorate their homes with LED lights. They organize Bhajans and kirtans till the Ram Navami. Ramayana is read in many places. People recall the heroism of Lord Ram in the Ramayana. The moral of good always reigning over evil is taught. People remember how Ram defeated the evil king of Sri Lanka, Ravana. Ramlila is performed in theatres and in Ramlila ground, open for the general public. 

Many people decorate the miniature idol of Ram and put it out in miniature cradles to mark his birth. Kheer is also prepared as an offering to God. 

People often put fast on this day and avoid eating some specific food. They visit temples to ask for the blessings of Lord Ram on this auspicious day. People also sing devotional songs and hymns from Ram Charitmanas to celebrate the day.

A ritual is also performed on this day called Kanya Puja. In this ritual, nine girls are invited, and the family members pay them respect as Hindus believe girls are the manifestation of devis. After the Puja is done, they are offered prasad, which consists of suji ka halwa. People also celebrate it by providing food and water to needy people.

Another ritual that is performed is taking a sacred bath in the holy river of Saryu. Saryu river is situated in Ayodhya. It is believed that taking a holy bath in the river purifies the body and soul.

On this day, not only Lord Rama but also Hanuman, Sita, and Laxman are offered prayings. These were the important people of Ramayana and were always there at Ram's aid. So, people also pray to Hanuman to offer his blessings upon them.

In some cities, people organize Rath yatras. In Rath yatras, people put photos of Ram, Sita, Laxman, and Hanuman in a decorated chariot. The volunteers around the streets then carry out chariots. Some people often celebrate it as the wedding anniversary of Lord Ram and Sita.

Some cities also organize a sport similar to the one played in Janmashtami. An earthen pot full of money is put up on the top of the tree. The team has to reach it by making a human pyramid. It is not easy to do so as the floor is filled with soft mud.

Rameshwaram is also one of the cities which celebrate the festival with great enthusiasm. People observe fast for nine days. The celebration of Ram Navami starts with the ceremonial marriage of Lord Ram with Goddess Sita. This ceremonial marriage is called Kalyanam. The ceremony is performed by the priests of the temple. At night, a grand function is held in temples that involve singing devotional songs by the devotees. Every festival consists of a delicious sweet dish served as a prasad. Panaka that is a drink made up of jaggery, is served as a prasad in temples.

Some people put up the tents on the roadside and give prasad to everyone who passes by the tent.
