Introduction of Karwa Chauth

India is a land of different festivals, and out of the many, Karwa Chauth is one. It is a one-day festival being celebrated annually by the Hindu married women on the fourth day of Purnima (full moon), which falls on the month of Kartik according to the Hindu lunar calendar. The married women observe a fast from dusk till dawn and pray for their husbands or partners' happiness and long life. It is usually observed in the month of October. This festival is most popular in the North Indian states especially Haryana, Rajasthan, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh etc. Various other states, including Maharashtra, Delhi, Kerala, also celebrate this occasion.

History of Karwa Chauth

On the auspicious occasion of the Kartik month, the essence of Karwa Chauth lies in the belief to serve argya (offering) to the moon in an earthen pot called Karwa. If divided into two parts, the words' karwa' literally means pot and 'Chauth literally means fourth. Hence it is celebrated on the fourth day of the month of Kartik. There are a lot of histories and beliefs/narrations which are associated with the celebration of the festival. One narration from the Mahabharata explains that Draupadi is believed to have observed Karwa Chauth. Arjuna once departed to the Nilgiri hills, thereby leaving the rest of the brothers to encounter challenges while he was away. When some problems rose up, Draupadi was quick to remember Lord Krishna. She prayed to him and asked him for some solutions to their problems. Krishna then told her a narrative about Goddess Parvati doing the Karwa Chauth rites in a similar circumstance. On hearing this, Draupadi, too, followed the procedures of Karwa Chauth, and they were saved from their problems. Hence, it is said that women observe Karwa Chauth to keep their partners and their family away from any harm or problems. Though the etymology of this festival is a bit blurry, people still believe some narratives like these since time immemorial, which gives a reason behind celebrating the festival.

Significance of Karwa Chauth

If seen from the regional point of view of celebrating this festival, it is mostly famous in the North and North-Western regions of India. Also, the men of these regions are basically army men or police officers belonging to the military forces of the Indian Army. They always have to be on their duty which strikes a risk in their lives. Hence, the festival's significance lies in the fact that the wives of these men take a fast the entire day, from sunrise till sunset and pray for their husbands to return safely after travelling to far off lands to engage themselves in the war for protecting the country. The festival is significant because of the fact that it strengthens familial bonds.

Ways of celebrating Karwa Chauth in India

Karwa Chauth is celebrated in a grand manner in Northern states. The women of the nearby villages gather together and spend the day in joy and laughter. They also call themselves God sisters and befriend themselves. Some celebrate it near ghats and offer puja, while others gather together atop a building, see the moon, and then offer prayers. It is only after seeing the moon can they see the face of their husbands. Women also gift each other lipstick, sindoor, bangles, etc., as a reminder that they are not alone and are always there for each other if needed. Some places celebrate Karwa Chauth in the following manner:

  • Punjab

One of the most important festivals celebrated by all married women in Punjab is Karwa Chauth. The women wake up early in the morning, preferably before sunrise and get ready for the festivities to follow. The woman's mother brings baya, which consists of dry fruits, sarees, utensils etc., for her daughter. On the night before Karwa Chauth, the mother of the girl, also brings presents for the girl's in-laws. Various rituals are followed after that, and the daughter is allowed to take food known as sargi, which again comprises of tasty delicacies including rotis and vegetables. When noon approaches, all the women bring their thalis together consisting of dry fruits, coconut, a small earthen lamp, a glass of milk and water and is first presented to the mother in law. A cloth is also draped around the plate. Then the ladies follow the ritual of sitting in a circle-like position around Goddess Parvati and listening to the Karwa Chauth tale narrated by an elderly woman in the group. After the puja is offered, the women begin to move in circles while singing religious songs. After the puja gets over, the daughters touch the feet of their mother in-laws and feed each other dry fruits, coconut and other eatables. In this way, they break their fast and then see the moon through a sieve before reciting a prayer for their husbands. After this ritual, the husband feeds the milk to the wife, and she touches his feet. After breaking the fast, both the husband and wife seek blessings from the other elder members of the family.

  • Uttar Pradesh

During this festival, women in UP get their hands and feet beautifully decorated with mehendi. The religious ceremonial functions take place as early as possible. When the new moon is seen, ladies from different colonies gather together and start praying. After following the ritual, the women sing prayers to Goddess Parvati and exchange karwas with each other. As soon as the moon is seen to arise in the clear sky, the women start ritualistic areas. In some places, they draw the face of the moon with rice and mark it with sindoor and offer rice, dry fruits, coconut, jewellery and the other signs of a married woman. In UP, their sargi comprises of lentil dumplings, dry fruit, vermicelli dipped in sweet milk etc.
