History of Indian Navy Day

Indian Navy was originally established by the British East India Company in 1612. It was called Royal India Navy, and then after independence, it was named Indian Navy in 1950.

Indian Navy Day was celebrated for the first time in 1944. It was celebrated to have a greater reach in the general public and also to create awareness. It was initially celebrated along with the Royal Navy's Trafalgar Day. 

It is celebrated on 4th August in order to commemorate and remember Operation Trident. In 1971, a war broke out between India and Pakistan when the Pakistan Air Force attacked the airfields in the Western part of India on 3rd December. 

The Indian Navy inflicted severe damage to the Pakistani forces but didn't suffer any losses itself. It resulted in the sinking of four Pakistani vessels and destroyed all of the fuel fields in Karachi, Pakistan. The Naval officers who were a part of this mission were presented with several awards. 

Indian Navy Day is celebrated to ensure the country's safety and develop relationships with foreign countries by working together, relief operations and other missions. 

Significance of Indian Navy Day

The Indian Navy celebrates the victory of the Indian Navy over the Pakistani forces in a war in 1971. It also celebrates and glorifies the brave officers who fought to save the country. Indian Navy is the seventh-largest and strongest naval force in the world. It celebrates the strength and courage of the officers who selflessly protect the country with utmost dedication.

Some events like sea swimming competitions are also held during Navy Week. Also, there are performances done by the Naval Symphonic Orchestra and lunch with the veteran soldiers. Quiz competitions are also held in the Naval schools. The Indian Navy has also undergone several developments and renovations to improve its efficiency to serve in the Indian Ocean. The Indian Army consists of over sixty-seven thousand crew and members and around one hundred and fifty submarines and warships.
